Poon Choi (盆菜)

Last Thursday, I went to eat Poon Choi with colleagues at Flemington hotel. What is Poon Choi?
When I googled, I found the below definition.

Poon Choi also known as pun choi or Big Bowl Feast, is a traditional type of food originated from Hakka cuisine. It may also be found in different parts of Hong Kong. It is served in wooden, porcelain or metal basin. Before the dish was served. We all were busy taking photos for each other. You took for me and I took for you.

Finally, the great dish arrived.
Here it was, the star of the night. Everyone was flashing their camera on it alone.
Second layer.
Third layer.
Fourth layer, the whole chicken appeared at the bottom of the dish.
Lucky me, got the drumstick.
The very last layer.
"Mei Ren Zhau Jing" (Direct translate will be beauty looks at mirror)
While taking dessert, we had the waiter taking a group shot for us.
The dessert was the longan and honeydew in blended ice-cream. Yummy!
Poon Choi includes ingredients such as chicken, fish maw, prawn, dried mushroom, squid, dried eel, roasted pork, yam, lotus, brocoli, Chinese radish and etc. Poon Choi is special in that it is composed of many layers of different ingredients. It is also eaten layer by layer instead of "stirring everything up", but impatient diners may snatch up the juicy radish at the bottom first using shared chopsticks. Traditional Village Poon Choi is served in large metal washing bowls with a perforated metal plate at the bottom to keep food from burning, as it is kept warm on a portable stove as it is being served. Some restaurants or providers change the poon choi and add fresh shrimp and fresh oyster instead of dried ones. This increases the potential risk of contamination by bacteria that causes disease. It has to be cooked thoroughly.
It is often served during religious rituals, festivals, special occasions and wedding banquets in open area of villages.

No.1 Moment

Today, April's nursery held the Awards Given Ceremony & Children Day. I purposely let her wear the dress that I bought from Kids Islands. I also reminded her to say "Thanks", and smile to camera, when she was up on stage. In the car, she opened up her bag, and showed me her trophies
, the Top Student Certificate and a balloon. She also brought back a pack of goodies that she didn't want to show in her pictures. May be she felt that the goodies were not something worth to show off in picture. lol!
Back to baby sitter's house, she wanted to show the trophies to the babysitter. The bigger trophy was Top Student, the other two was one for Maths Contest Champion and Best Writing.
Little May wanted to have a touch at the trophy as well.
At last, she didn't want to return to the Jie Jie and wanted to keep it as her toy. I quickly kept all the trophies back in the car, before the fighting started. Phew!

My vegetarian food

I was taking vegetarian food for the past few days during the Ninth Emperor's Birthday celebration. These were the food that I bought from the nearest vegetarian stall. This stall was really selling yummy vegetarian food, that made me still missing the food until now. Too bad that it only sold vegetarian food on this specific days. Vegetarian Chai Kueh was really soft and delicious.

Green and red beans soup was high in fiber and protein. It was healthy and it wasn't too sweet.

This vegetarian mihun rebus was the best in town. I took mihun rather than yellow noodle, as mihun lower in calories. The soup had a good mix of sweet, sour and spicy. Even the chillies were well blended.

Cycling Time

When we had time constraint on weekend evening, we would just let the girls cycling around the park at our housing area. Cycling is a good form of exercise that will enable the children to sweat after using energy to ride the bicycle.

They both would bring along their teddy bears and place it inside the basket. April one is a pink bear and May one is a white bear. They named it and called it that way too.

While they were on the road, the muscular body guide was escorting them with a rod in his hand to protect them from stray dogs, if any.

They stopped by the benches and let their teddy bears to stretch out their hairy hands and legs for a while.

We had to leave there when the sky was getting dark and we really scared of the mosquitoes.

Soup of the week: Swee corn and veggie soup

Some people may be on vegetarian for the first 9 days in the ninth month of Chinese Lunar. I was on vegetarian for the last 3 days of the Ninth Emperor's Birthday for a wish that I made to the Ninth Emperor God 2 years ago. I wish for good health for my family.

I started to eat vegetarian food on last Saturday until Monday. So, I decided to cook a vegetarian soup on the weekend.

The ingredients:
Sweet corn 1
Carrot 2
Cranberry beans 100g
Honey dates 2
Red dates 10

First time, the soup without meat looked so healthy and clear. My two princesses loved this soup too, as it was really sweet and nice. They just ate a big bowl of rice with this soup alone.

Juice: Beet Root

I have heard quite a lot of Beet Root and its health benefits, I never have a chance to taste on it. Finally, I managed to find it at the local night market. According to the veggie seller, she said that it tastes really nice when it mixes with Apple in juice.

So, I decided to make Beet Root and Green Apple juice for hubb and myself.

Its red purplish flesh is rich in iron. Due to its higher content of iron, it regenerates and reactivates the red blood cells, supplies fresh oxygen to the body and helps the normal function of vesicular breathing i.e. normal breath sound. It is thus extremely useful in the treatment of anaemia.

This vegetable is a good tonic food for health. It contains carbohydrates, mainly in the form of sugar, and it has a little protein and fat. Beet is taken in a variety of ways. The skin should be removed before use. The leaves, like all green vegetables, should be cooked with a small amount of water and for only a short time. The fresher the beets, the better the flavour and the quicker they cook.

The beet juice is considered as one of the best vegetable juice. It is a rich source of natural sugar. It contains sodium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, sulphur, chlorine, iodine, iron, copper, vitamin B1, B2, C and P. This juice is rich in easily digestible carbohydrates, but the calorie content is low. The protein factors or amino acids are good in both quality and quantity.

My CROCS

My best friend Cannie gave the inspiration to have this CROCS. My husband gave the motivation to get this CROCS. My sore toes after walking too long at Genting Theme Park gave the conclusion to buy this CROCS.

should not fit like other shoes.
They should fit very loosely. The sides of your foot should not really touch the sides of the shoe. Your toes should never make contact with the front of the shoe. Once you have centered your foot on the foot-bed:

Weekend outdoor bubbles play

Last weekend, April was urging us to let her play bubbles since the time she woke up from bed. Hubb promised to bring them to the park in the evening if the weather was permitted.

In the evening, we woke up from our sweet nap, hubb also came back from his badminton games. Though the sky was kind of dark, there was no sign of raining. We hurriedly drove to the Lake Garden.

This was what we did in the park. Having fun with the bubbles.

My two princesses are very shy girls. Outsiders are hardly able to see them so relax and cheerful.

Interesting things to do with husband

I am sure everyone have their own list of interesting things to do with their partner.

This is the list that I gathered so far, may be you can find your ideal things to do in it,
1. Baking or cooking together. ( I saw my friend Su In and her husband Alex did that before.)
2. Doing house chores together. (eg. Hang the laundry on the line together. )
3. Go for a late evening walk round a local park together. (My neighbour couple did that often.)
4. Have a bath together, help him to rub his back with body SPA scrub. (Really turning on him.)
5. Give each other a massage with aromatherapy essential oil.
6. Cuddle up and watch a film together. (I like this idea, but my hubb scares of my body heat.)
7. Listen and dance to your favourite music.
8. Jog together, with or without the dog in the park.
9. Shopping together, make sure you hold hands.
10. Singing Karaoke together. (Preferably duet lovey dovey songs.)
11. Doing puzzles together.
12. Packing a picnic in the park.
13. Gardening together.
14. Exercise together. (We went to gym together.)

Number 15. is our most interesting thing to do, I actually had elaborated on it here. Normally, hubb would give me a signal at a specific time, and I would rush my two girls to go to bed. Then, we both got ourselves ready for hanging out cheap but happy.
Beer and snack. Beer wasn't that cheap, ok! But snack was from the nearest Pasar Malam. Only RM 1 per pack.
He would set up the home theatre for us. Romantic ho?
p/s: Bear in mind, the beer and snack are not healthy for long term consumption. Once in while, never mind la! Due to the weight gained recently, I snack on this big plate of fruit now and totally fore go the beer and junk food.

The fashion for kids

Jesslyn left me a comment in my blog earlier. I found out that she has a blog of selling her own custom made fashion for children - KIDS ISLANDS. After browsing KIDS ISLANDS for quite a while, I decided to place an order of 2 dresses for my princesses. My princesses heart dresses very much, especially those princess type of gowns.

Without much delay, I asked hubb to make an online money transfer on last Friday night. Jesslyn is so fast response. She sent out the dresses on Monday and I received them on Tuesday.
Upon fetching them back from the baby sitter's house, I let them have a try on the dresses. To my surprise, the dress fit them so well.
The material of the dresses are so nice and so comfy for the children to wear.
The dresses are suitable for many occasions, like birthday party, family dinner, school year end party, wedding dinner and etc.
RM64 ( including the delivery charge ) for two tailor made dresses is reasonable.

Soup of the week 11: Pumpkin Soup

I love pumpkin very much, but my children don't like pumpkin that much. This was the first time I used pumpkin to boil soup, so that I myself could enjoy the pumpkin, and the children could enjoy the soup.Ingredients:
250g of pumpkin, skinned and seed.
10 red dates,
10g wolf berries
250g pork
Second dish was the stir fried french beans, Japanese tofu (deep fried beforehand) with prawn. May be you would notice that I cooked french beans most of the time, as it was my girls' favourite veggie.
3rd dish was deep fried chicken drumsticks, chicken wings, and chicken breasts. This was a very simple dish. After washed and cleaned the chicken, dip it in the egg white first, and then only dip it evenly in the Kentucky's all purpose flour. Heat the wok with more oil, put the chicken in the oil and deep fry them until it turned to golden brown colour.
Tadaaaa, a balance meal which consist of vitamins, fibre, protein and carbohydrate.
