I went picking up April from school yesterday, in the car.
She: Mummy, the drawing contest result was out.
Me : Really? You won?
She: Yes, number 2.
Me: Who is number 1?
She: QZ.
Me: Again.
QZ, her classmate, was also the champion of Primary 1 drawing contest last year. He and April engage with the same art teacher outside. If you have forget how were their drawings last year, you can view this link.
This year theme is "Flowers and butterflies".
The champion's drawing is very colourful, bright and complete. He drew rainbow, bridge and mountain.
April's drawing is a bit empty if compare to the champion's. She drew mushroom, flower pot and caterpillar and tree log. I personally like clouds as the background of her drawing.
I couldn't get a clearer picture because of the glass. Please share with me how you find these two drawings. I think my daughter was too lazy to draw more things.

On the way to PIL's house for dinner.
Me: Mummy had taken pictures of you and QZ's drawings. Mummy had spent some time looking and analysing the drawings. I personally like your drawing more. The colour is nicer, the drawing is nicer, the background is also nicer. But, QZ drew more things, he colored more things, he put in more effort and time for those extra things that he drew. So he gained more marks than you. He deserved the number 1. The result is fair.
April: Mummy, did you take at look at number 3 drawing? It is not nice at all............bla...bla...bla...
Then, we changed topic.
I forgot to mention. All students were taking part in this drawing contest which held in school. They were required to draw extra objects on a pre-printed drawing papers. The pre-printed drawing paper consists of some flowers at the left and a butterfly at the middle. Drawing and colouring needed to be completed and submitted to teachers within 2 hours.
I admit that I have more expectation in her drawing than any other competitions that she took part. She has started the art lesson since she was 4 years old.

I like April's drawing the most.
ReplyDeleteShe is not lazy. The emptiness is just nice for the whole drawing.
CY, really appreciate your drop by and feedback.
DeleteI dun think she is lazy too ... sometime once need inspiration to draw :) Both also nice for me . sometime too much might not turn out to be good, it will get messy .
ReplyDeleteI really admired ur girl spirit on taking part on those competitions, from sport to art to sing .... she is really GOOD la .... "slap slap loud over here" :)
Thanks Anggie for your kind words and compliments.
Deleteaiseh, spelling error , should b clap clap ... paiseh:P
Deletehey April's is simple and nice...
ReplyDeletethe other drawing like rojak....
maybe they look for qty and not quality .. kakakakaka
I hope you are not just pacifying me. Thanks, Simple Person.
DeleteYan,
DeleteNo lah... I also agree with SP.
The other tu, too crowded lah. Hers one is very nice to look at.
actually I am not good in drawing...
ReplyDeleteeverytime I got C & D..
but after I went for art class..
I got A2 for SRP... keng chow...
I believe that art teacher could guide and help to improve our art skill.
You really keng chow. My art is suck forever one.
DeleteMe too!
DeleteThat's why never opt to sit for Art paper during SRP (I am soooo OLD!) and SPM. ;p
Slowly but surely April sure can get no 1 one lah, anyway what is more important is that she is enjoying it,kan?
ReplyDeleteThanks Eugene.
DeleteNow I think of, she didn't spend as much time as last year to prepare for this theme. It is good enough to be at number 2 already.
ReplyDeleteHer drawing skill is actually better. Her shading is nicer than the champion's.
ReplyDeleteThanks Carolyn
DeleteI also like April's drawing. Very nice! You must be proud of her achievement!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kitty.
Deleteactually i prefer your daughter's April drawing, not too crowded and just simple and nice.
ReplyDeleteSometimes too many stuff in one drawing will only make it looks complicated. I actually preferred April's drawing. Simple and nice.
ReplyDeleteKeep it up, I'm sure April will come out to be a champion one day.
Thanks Little Kit Boy.
DeleteWow April's work looks wonderful... it's simple yet beautiful..I prefer your daughter's work it's very neat and well detailed.
ReplyDeleteI agree that her work is very neat. Thanks Genskie.
Deletelooks like April is getting some prizes so frequently recently huh?? such a talented girl..
ReplyDeleteno wonder cannot see the paintings properly, it was the reflection from the glass panel.. and hey, i also saw your silhouette taking photo on the glass!! haha~~
ReplyDeleteSK, you are so observant.
DeleteWow!! I am surprised to see her painting done so beautifully and well. This is an honest statement from a qualified student who graduated from the best advertising school in USA. You can see my stuffs in my blog's side bar titled "My Paintings" which was part of our business studies. What a big boaster I am!.... Kakakaka...
ReplyDeleteWhen I was at her age, I definitely could not do tonings like her. If I am an investor, I will buy April's painting which is more suitable to make prints on cards, moon cake boxes, fabric or wallpapers! Don't you agree?
TM, no, you are not a boaster. You are good. I just have a look at your paintings, no wonder you can make your parents so proud of you.
DeleteHow can I not agree with your professional opinions? Thanks for your compliment. She learned art at 4 years old. That is why she can do tonings at 8 years old.
Thank you for your comments in my old blog posting. You just made me realise that kids today progress very much faster and earlier than our time. Probably, they have better food, competitive surroundings and supportive parents that helps their development. My wife told me that majority of the kids in the expensive schools do not enjoy their parents' attention as the parents are usually too busy with their big businesses and social lives. The end results were usually painful and too late for the parents when they saw the final exam results. You are doing very well in balancing.
DeleteI was a Science student in school but my mother insisted that i should take extra Art subject for SPM since I have some Art talent and it does not need to study any books. I was reluctant and shy at first to take Arts as it shocked my classmates. Goodness, the 'A' i got for Arts in SPM saved my ass when the results came out I failed 2 Science subjects. So malu but thankful la... LOL
DeleteYan,
DeleteI know! I know.
You ask Uncle SK to make nice, nice card and ask Uncle TM to promote it. Got two talented uncle here what. ;p
Waaah! Our Petai Fairy got sucha brilliant idea huh!.... Why ask Thambee SK to design the cards?? You can round up all the bloggers' kids to draw and we print for charity. Maybe donate to rumah anak yatim and orang2 tua uzur!!
DeleteNice drawings..Is all the pictures also have to draw themselves. I noticed both pictures are totally different.
ReplyDeleteDid you notice the flowers at the left and the butterfly at the middle were the same? They needed to draw extra objects at a pre-printed drawing papers.
Deleteactually at the age of 8, i think these colorings are really stunning!! look at those tones and the way they color objects!! wow, i don't remember i can even do that at that age..
ReplyDeleteactually April's drawing is nice, i can see her coloring is actually better than QZ.. maybe just that hers is a little too plain for the judges??
ReplyDeleteI have the same thinking as you, SK.
Deleteof course when the judges see more things on the drawings, they will already given additional marks to the extra effort right??
ReplyDeletePrecisely correct, SK.
Deletemaybe April's drawing is a little too "matured" haha.. QZ's one makes us feel more like a happy children, with the smiling sun and the rainbows etc..
ReplyDeleteApril's work is lovely!
ReplyDeleteApril... Auntie Lina wishes she can colour like that! :)
Thanks lina.
DeleteWah, both also good......really nice drawings!
ReplyDeleteThanks Pete.
DeleteNo, April is not lazy, Yan. Every individual is unique and none can share the same mindset. If she drew as QZ and still kept at 2nd place, what's your thought then? Could it be the champion drew even more complicated than April? 2nd place is good enough to make your April has more room to grow. You have to encourage her to do better but not comparing her to another child. Comparison is an action of demoralizing. Encouragement is a wiser way, my dear.
ReplyDeleteDear friend, I do admit I have some expectation in her drawings than music or sports, as she learns art since 4 years old. She doesn't learn sports and music as much as art. No, I didn't try to compare, but I had to find out what she is still lacking, so that she can do better. Thanks for kind thoughts, friend.
DeleteI'm no good in art, so below is my personal view:
ReplyDeleteI don't think April is lazy, she's neat in her drawing and coloring. Thus it's simpler.
As for QZ, he used more color tones for the grass, sky and background. Maybe the judges wanted to see how children play with colors. So they chose QZ as the champion.
Art is very subjective, why is Mona Lisa so popular when the colors is boring?
Thanks Yvonne for your kind words. Her drawing is indeed neat and simple. Agree, art is subjective.
DeleteI thought the same too. April's drawing is really neat! The color is in sync too!
DeleteApril already did her best. I think her drawings are nice and soothing to the eyes. Love her soft colours. Well done April !
ReplyDeleteHi Sheoh Yan, all the paintings are really impressive.....Your April's very imaginative, very creative.
ReplyDeleteAnyway....I guess it depends what the teacher wanted in the first place....
Give April a chance, she'll do you proud one day.
She's still young.....let her find her own way....
Incidentally, I failed my art in Form 3 and in 5. 4 years later 5 of my oil paintings 4' x 5' width was displayed by invitation at Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman in Jalan Ampang, KL.
My art teacher told me when in school, "you got no hope, no future where art is concerned"!
I have 7 oil paintings sold in England, (one in a millionaire's mansion), 5 in Australia, in Malaysia a few, and in my place now 3, I kept for myself. My paintings sold between $500 to $2000.
Yes, I failed my art in school, ha ha.
Best regards.
Lee.
Oh yes I like April coloring skill too. Love the color ton and the well blending between 2 colors.
ReplyDeleteThe champion coloring skill is so so, but her drawing is more lively compared to April by drawing smiling butterflies & sun. Maybe teacher prefer drawing like this kuar.
April's colouring skill is much better... her shading and toning is so even and nice (even I can't do this!). If she had filled up the empty space with a bit more things, sure win 1st prize already. Anyway, she has done a great job! Congrats to her :)
ReplyDeletegood job to April. hmmm...i sense that you are not very happy about her drawing/result? i think she has done very well. if my kid were to draw like her, i'll be beaming inside out. is april upset that she got no. 2?
ReplyDeleteBarb, thanks for your concern. No, I wasn't unhappy. She wasn't upset too. May be a little of dissapointment.
DeleteLike Datuk Lee met with Lin Dan in the badminton matches. Datuk Lee lost to Lin Dan most of the time, Datuk Lee ought to know why he lose to Lin Dan. It is not comparison, but it is kind of analysing the result, and to do better in future.
Thanks everyone for your comments.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to April! Looks like I must enrol Gwen to art class soon..but I'm delivering soon so need to keep on hold first.
ReplyDeleteActually I like April's colouring and blending technique more. Her drawing is very pleasing to the eyes not too crowded.
hi Yan,
ReplyDeletehonest opinion, I like April's drawing more than QZ's
April's drawing is more classy and alive while QZ's is a little too crowded
but both are vibrant
many times, less is more
but efforts gotta be appreciated, i guess :)
anyway, big congrats to April! very talented girl! :)
it's really hard to judge which one is better as i find both has their own creativity and beautiful in their own ways. i also like the clouds too in apri's painting.
