Honey moon and foodie trip Kuching,Sarawak

16:44 Yannie 28 Comments

Ever since April and May took part in ping pong national tournaments, we have been following them to different places in Malaysia. We went to Perlis in 2011, Kuala Lumpur in 2012, Kelantan in 2013, Melacca in 2014 and Kuching, Sarawak in 2015.

During the tournament at Kuching, April and May needed to follow their coach and stay with their teammates all the time. We actually stayed in a different hotel.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Padungan. This hotel is located in the center of city. We could easily walk to the nearby restaurants for some of the local delicacies. It was very rare that we could spend time together without the noise of the two chatter boxes. Thus, we truly enjoyed this foodie trip. Just the two of us walked around the town and we tried so many good food. I almost forgot that I could be so sweet, gentle and sexy too, ahem! I also almost forgot that he could be so loving, caring and attentive too, ahem! Since we were so stress-free, I didn't bother to remember the names of the restaurants that we went. It was already not bad that I could still remember to snap the pictures of the food we took. Muahahaha!

Meat porridge and belacan mee hoon. Both are equally tasty!

Assorted biscuits, such as wife biscuits, husband biscuits, walnut biscuits, mung beans biscuits, sweet potatoes biscuits, egg tarts, rice biscuits, and many many more. We bought a few to try. Some of them are quite delicious.

Wahsei! These are tricolors milk tea and coconut sugar cane drink. Fantastic to quench the thirst on hot days! I like.

Fish balls soup and egg toast. Good too!

Kolo mee. Not bad!

Kompia and port satay. Worth trying!

Fried carrot cake. So so only.

Layered cakes. Cheap and nice!

Popiah. Taste was just normal only.

Sarawak laksa. To me, I still prefer Penang laksa. Sarawak laksa tastes like curry + assam laksa.

Seafood. We tried assam fish and salted egg crabs. Quite good!

I always see these in STP's blog. These are midin and sayur manis. They are indeed yummy.

I am so happy to find these rattan basket (RM7) and rattan bags (RM15) in Kuching. I want to steam cake or huat kuih with this rattan basket.

We also bought some instant kampua noodles, rice crackers, green pea crackers and sweet potatoes biscuits. We didn't buy a lot as we were not going home right after the Kuching trip.

When the tournament was over and the coach returned the two chatter boxes to us,  we were back to parenthood. There started our role as the tiger and tigress, yelling at the top of the lungs when battling with the time to sleep, wake, bath, eat,.......... etc.

Story of the year 2015

15:58 Yannie 20 Comments

Hi, Hi, folks. A few more days that we are going to bid farewell to 2015. Every year this time, many will write about their resolution of the new year. My resolution is forever the same - losing the last stubborn 5 pounds.

I look back this year, though there was something happened to test my willpower, I have resolved the matter and gained an experience. Other than that incident, I consider my year of 2015 is fruitful.

1. I felt happy and proud of myself for being the 3rd in my maiden run at King of Bukit Larut, on 26 April 2015.

2. My department was the champion in our company Talent Show dance performance. This was another happy moment of mine on 16 May 2015.

3. My two princesses represented Perak to take part in the national tournament that hold in Kuching, Sarawak.
4. We went to Golden Sand hotel, Penang for a 3D2N stay in June school break. My best friend, Su In and her family joined us for the getaway.

5. I took part in the parental singing competition on 13 September 2015. I paired with May, and that was my maiden singing competition. So nervous!

6. April and May were both first in the form of standard 3 and standard 5.  April also won herself the best female student of standard 5 award. I am so proud of my two princesses.

7. I lead a very active lifestyle by doing yoga, zumba, gym, swimming, hiking and sauna throughout the year. These are my zumba classmates. The one in green singlet next to me is my zumba teacher.

8. We visited Kuching, Sarawak on 26 - 29 November 2015. My two daughters were there for the table tennis tournament, so they were busy at the stadium most of the time. My husband and I had a chance to tour Kuching, Sarawak just the two of us. We were like the newly-wed couple having our honeymoon again. Wakakaka!

9. Finally, our dream came true on 2 - 10 December 2015. We materialized our wish by leaving our foot prints on the land of  the rising sun, Japan. We went to Disneyland, Disneysea, Mt.Fuji and many other places in Tokyo during our tour.

10. I last visited Singapore was in year 2000. After 15 years, I am so excited to see the greatest Christmas Lights displays in the world. The glittering lights on the famous shopping belt of Orchard Road, here we come for our Christmas eve count down and Christmas celebration.

That is all, this is my review of the year 2015.

To all my friends, wishing you Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2016!

You smell good, you feel good

11:38 Yannie 13 Comments

As a working mother of 2 daughters who are still studying in primary school, my life is fully occupied with work and chauffeuring my two girls to school, tuition and other activities. Besides, I lead a very active lifestyle by joining Zumba, gym and yoga. Therefore, I only want to have a peace of mind every day to carry out my duty as an employee, wife and mother.

Every morning, I spend time in looking good before stepping out my house. I wash and blow my hair, I put moisturizer and sun block, I apply mascara and lip gloss, and lastly I never forget to spray a good fragrance. I truly believe that you don’t smell good your whole personality goes haywire and all your efforts in looking good goes for a toss.  For me, if you don’t smell good, then you don’t look good too.

Just imagine, a guy dresses smartly, but when he opens his arms, his armpits odor would make you run to vomit in the toilet.  I think if he has the look of LeeMinHo also you won’t want to stand near him. T___T

Other than using a good fragrance, all wonderful scents like candles, flowers, and nicely brewed coffee would simply lift our spirits, making us feel more positive, nurturing, even when our environment is stressful or overwhelming.

Thanks to Kleenex team for letting me experience the Kleenex® ‘Power of Scent’. I got the chance to enjoy it softness, infusing rose essential oil or cherry blossom fragrance into its first Kleenex® 3-Ply Scented Facial Tissues for an absolutely delightful and uplifting user experience.

It is also known that floral scents in particular cultivate a happier, more optimistic outlook and this can have a positive effect on how people interact with others[i] - just imagine the impact a pack of Kleenex® 3-Ply Scented Facial Tissues can have around the home and office, or carried around in a purse!

To introduce these exciting new variants, Malaysians are invited to join the “power of scent” movement and bring softness and scent into their lives and into those of their loved ones simply by requesting for a sample of the brand-new Kleenex® 3-Ply Scented Tissues at http://powerofscent.kleenex.com.my and share uplifting messages on social media with the hashtag #KleenexPowerofScent.

Look for the new Kleenex® 3-Ply Scented Facial Tissues in box packs (RM10.30 for four packs of 74 sheets and RM14.55 for four packs of 114 sheets) and soft packs (RM5.35 for four packs of 46 sheets).

I believe that scents affect thoughts and behaviours. Don’t you think so? The smell of the Kleenex scented tissue rose on my desk has successfully put a smile on my face.

By the way, if you have armpit odor, you don’t need to use deodorant anymore, you can use Kleenex® 3-Ply Scented Facial Tissues to clean up to sensorial experience that lifts your spirits, making it easier to deal with the demands of daily life.

Everything happens for a reason, for better or worse

16:18 Yannie 35 Comments

….but we ought to know why the reason.

This post is a continuous from my previous post that I promise to update everyone on how the matter got resolved at the end.

1.  10am Friday 6 November. I called the headmaster from my office. The headmaster (HM) was not in, as she had gone for a course in Langkawi in the morning. I could only talk to the assistant headmaster (AHM).  Then, I learned that KE and her mother had actually seen the headmaster the day before. She went to make apology to the headmaster and KE cried again.

2. 12:30pm Friday 6 November, I took 2 hours of time off and drove the school. AHM told me that one of the questions in the English paper was marked wrongly. The position in the form would be different after the adjustment. But, AHM didn’t tell me the action that the school would take on the behavior of KE and her mother towards my daughter.

I asked AHM,

“The adult came to my daughter directly and asked for her exam papers inside the school compound. My daughter had no one to protect her that time. What if my daughter said NO, what would happen?“

“You have announced that my daughter is the number 1 at two rehearsals of the school concert. If she isn’t the number 1 at the actual school concert, how will she feel? “

“If KE’s mother can check my daughter’s exam papers, can I check her exam papers too? “

“I thought all exam papers were signed by the parents and the marks were entered in the computer. No change is allowed. Because of the mother’s complaint, you change?  Next year, another mother comes and the student cries, you also change?”

AHM promised me that the school would do something about my complaint after having meeting with HM.

3. 6pm Friday 6 November. Back at home from work. I received two calls from the committees in the parent-teacher association (PTA).  They knew about this matter from my best friend. They said that they supported me to go against this behaviour. They would help me to bring this matter up to the chairman of PTA.

Let me tell you more about KE and her mother. KE is a champion kid. She won many prizes in singing, dancing, drawing and speaking competitions. Her mother is a rich tai tai who can afford to spend lot of time chitchatting with other mothers and teachers in the schools. She walks in and out the school like her second home. She is also good in bribing teachers. She would make her daughter shine like a star in all school performance. Because of their high profile, they have unintentionally created many enemies that they themselves don’t realize.

One of her enemies suddenly becomes my good friend. Now only I understand this sentiment well, “my enemy’s enemy is my friend.” Lol!  Let’s call her MF. MF’s son is KE’s classmate. Apparently , MF's son is now at position 3 in the form. MF’s husband is also the committee of PTA. MF called me and shared with me so many stories about KE’s mother. MF asked me to be careful because many teachers flavor KE. She said that this matter is serious, I should make that an issue so that KE and her mother learned a lesson for not doing it again to other children.

I managed to call and inform May’s form teacher about this matter. May’s form teacher told me that even though that English question was marked wrongly. It wouldn’t affect May’s position. She could confirm that May was still 2 marks more than KE.

Finally, a closed door meeting was arranged by the PTA on Deepavali school break.

4. 11am 11 November Wednesday. The members of the closed door meeting were HM, AHM, PTA (my friend), KE’s mother and me. In the closed meeting, HM and PTA said that KE’s mother was not right to assess May’s exam papers. KE’s mother explained that her intention was not trying to pull May’s position down. She said that she knew English paper had one controversial question. She had planned to let May and KE hold hands and go up to the stage to receive awards.  After  KE’s mother had explained, I commented that her intention for assessing my daughter’s exam papers was still considered unkind and hurtful to my daughter. KE’s mother admitted her own mistake. She asked for apology and she promised that she won’t do that again in future. HM too assured me that the school will do something to prevent this from happening again.  I accepted and I initiated to shake hand with everyone and also KE’s mother.

I am not too sure whether I did right. I just know that I would never give up protecting my own children from unfair or unkind action that anyone did to my children. Now, I just hope that May is not in the same class with KE next year.

Thanks folks for all your valuable comments and input. I really appreciate it.

Anay TM, thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts in the email. Thanks for telling me that we must go praying in Sensoji Temple next month.

Something happened and it is bothering me

17:30 Yannie 33 Comments

When I type this post, frankly speaking I do not have a peace of mind. Something happened for the past two days, and it is bothering me.

1. Monday, 2Nov and Tuesday 3Nov ,  my daughters were busy practicing their dance and having the rehearsal for their school year end concert. Therefore, they got to know their positions in classes even though the report cards are not yet given to parents.

2. Wednesday, 4Nov, my two girls informed me that they are both top in the form. I of course very happy.

3. Thursday, 5 Nov I received a call which is not in my contact list at 3pm. The caller told me she is KE's mother. KE is my younger daughter, May's biggest competitor. May and KE are in different class. May was the first, and KE was the second in the form last year (Standard Two). Apparently, this year, KE is also the second in the form. Over the phone, KE's mother said that she wanted to notify me that she had borrowed my daughter's exam papers. She said to me, " Your daughter is so sweet and she is so nice to borrow us. ". The intention of her call was to let me know that she had taken a look at my daughter's exam paper. She didn't want me to get angry after getting know this happening from others. I felt rather fishy that time. Why on earth she wanted to see all my daughter's exam paper? I immediately asked her, "Why didn't you check from the teachers? Why must you borrow from my daughter? (p/s: She and me are just Hi Bye friends) Do you know this is not a right procedure? You should not check my daughter's exam papers without my permission? It is too late that you inform me now? Even if you ask for my permission, I may not want to borrow you. You should ask teachers if you have any query on the marking. I will consider to bring this up to the Headmaster."KE's mom again said "KE felt very dissatisfied as she is just one or two points different."

4. Thursday 5Nov, as usual I went to pick up my daughters from school. I wanted to understand the whole thing better from my own daughter before I wanted to see the headmaster. We went home and we talked. Apparently, KE's mother and daughter were waiting for May to reach the school, they waited her at the canteen. Then, they asked to borrow all the exam papers from May. They returned the exam papers to her only at recess time. At the same time, KE's mother asked May for my phone number to call me

5. Thursday 5Nov, May also told me that, all their English papers needed to be returned to teacher before the school ended that day.

Up to this point, do you have any comment?

To be continue........

Every day is a laundry day for us. My daughters' school uniforms, my husband and my work uniforms, our pajamas, our sports attires and other clothes When the haze was gone and the rainy season is here, the laundry is not drying completely, I can smell foul and musty on the damp clothes, especially my sports apparel. My 11 years old, April suffered from skin allergy since she was just a new born. She always has itchiness on her hands, legs, back and body. I had brought her to see many skin doctors. Each time, the doctor would give her antihistamine drugs and claramine lotion. Sometime, when her skin allergy flared up, she has to get injection to make the itchiness, swollen, redness subside. She has skin allergy on and off, even though she is still on oral medicine every day. I want to thank Anay TM to share about the benefits of using Envirohome body wash in his blog. Because of his recommendation, I
received the Envirohome body wash for April for to try out.

She has been using it for two weeks, so far she has no more itchiness on her body. She has clear skin now. I plan to stop her oral medicine this few days and see how it goes. I believe she can do without the medicine very soon.

Steamed Moist Chocolate Cake

14:22 Yannie 20 Comments

I mentioned in my earlier post that we baked him a cake. I found a recipe that is simple and nice to do - Steamed Moist Chocolate Cake. Therefore I informed my two daughters that we were going to make a cake for papa as his birthday cake this year.

In fact it is a steamed cake that is easy for people to do without oven. It looks great after removing from fire.

I have my two girls to decorate the cake by dusting the icing sugar, colourful balls, and chocolate chips. Pardon their first time in decorating the cake, it is my fault for not giving them a good training beforehand.

The cake was cut after keeping in the refrigerator for one day.

I would prefer the cake to be taller. I had used a pan which is too large for the cake.

Luckily, after he tried a slice of it, he wanted another slice. Awww! I was so happy that he likes the cake.

The cake was still very nice to eat after keeping for 2 days in the refrigerator. I am sure going to make this cake again.

Steamed Moist Chocolate Cake
Recipe is adapted with minor modification from Vivian Pang Kitchen.
Ingredients:~
(A)
180g butter
60g caster sugar
60g light brown sugar
200g full cream evaporated milk
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon of rum (optional, I omitted this)
(B)
2 eggs, slightly beaten with fork
(C)
100g all-purpose flour
50g cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
~Chocolate ganache topping
100g dark chocolate
100g dairy whipping cream
Some chocolate rice for sprinkle (I used colour balls, icing sugar and chocolate chips)
Methods:
1. Put all (A) ingredients into a saucepan and stir over low heat until sugar has dissolved and butter has melted. Remove from heat and allow to cold completely.
2. Add beaten eggs into (A) and stir till well mix.
3. Sift dry ingredients from (C) into a mixing bowl. Pour in butter egg mixture(from step 2) and whisk to combine.
4. Pour batter into a greased and lined 8 or 9 inch round baking pan. Bring a pot of water to rapid boil. Place the cake into the steamer and cover loosely with an aluminium foil. Lower the heat to medium and steam the cake for about 45 minutes.
5. Cool cake in pan before turning out for decoration.
6. Prepare ganache topping by cooking chocolate and cream over double boiler method. Once most of the chocolate melted remove from heat. Stir till smooth and pour the ganache over cake. Sprinkle top with some chocolate rice. Serve!

Date on his Birthday's eve

16:31 Yannie 27 Comments

Throwback on his Birthday's eve.

My fitness freak husband will only give me options of working out, cycling, or swimming as our date plan. On his birthday's eve, he surprised me by suggesting a lunch date with me at Korean BBQ restaurant, Che Go at AEON. It was a Monday, it was my off day, the girls were at school.

He ordered a hot pot of Seafood Kimchi with some traditional Korean side dishes.

I was happy, as I couldn't remember when was the last time we had date like this.

Seafood Kimchi hot spot

Fruit tea

I took all these food pictures to make my girls jealous of my date with their past life lover. lol!
The girls and me had made him a steamed chocolate moist cake on our own , he liked the cake very much. This was a very simple celebration we had together for his birthday.

Fitness is my passion

15:38 Yannie 18 Comments

I have mentioned umpteens times that I love exercise and I am a gymaholic. Toned arms, firmed abs, squared shoulders, tight butts, lean, vibrant, flawless health. That's my passion for fitness. I achieve the benefits of staying fit, and I also give up hobbies and interests that I previous enjoyed.

Leading an active lifestyle, I have got benefits such as fit appearance, higher energy, better overall health, fewer food cravings due to balanced diet and exercise regime. On the other hand, I have also traded off the time to social with friends at gatherings, the commitment to pursue work advancement, the fun events with colleagues, the eat out at restaurant, the drinks at cafe, the cake at bakery, sleep an rest. That's my body and that's my choice. I just have to compromise to two principles:
1. If you want to make further changes to your body, you'll need to make further changes to your behaviors.
2. The less body fat you want to get, the more of your behaviors you'll have to change.

Me and my gym buddies

You spot me? I am at my Zumba lesson

Once a week at Sauna to let my sore muscle recover from workout.

These are my animal prints collection.
Digressing from the fitness topic. I just want to share here that my bikinis, my sauna bath ropes and my jumpsuit are animal prints. Hehehe!

I go to gym 4 times a week. I do Zumba 2 times a week. I go swimming, hiking and sauna, each once a week. I am still thinking of adding a yoga class on Sunday early morning before my family wakes up.

I still believe that I have the power to choose my priorities and goals. I am able to make the decisions to get the body I really need while still living the life I want.

Weekends home cooked breakfast

16:31 Yannie 16 Comments

I don't always make breakfast for my family. When I have mojo to make breakfast, my menu is usually American style breakfast.
The breakfast menu is sausage, sunny side up egg, toast, baked beans, cucumber and tomatoes.
Sometimes, it is depended on what I have in the fridge. I made French toast sandwiched with Nutella when I had left over bread.
Pasta in tomatoes sauces is my daughters's most favourable breakfast menu.
I saw this recipe in FB. Flattening the left-over bread with dough roller, the recipe is using cheddar cheese, but I applied butter on the bread as I didn't have cheddar cheese. Wrapping hot dog with the bread, and dipping the bread roll into egg. Then, heat up oil for deep frying the hot dog rolls. It would be nicer to coat with bread crumbs before frying, but I didn't.
Flour, egg, milk and sugar are good enough to make pancakes like these. We love eating pancake plain without adding any topping.
Kneading steamed sweet potatoes with glutinous rice flour, sugar and oil, then deep frying them into sweet potatoes balls.
When the overnight Chinese tortoise bun had become hard, I would slice them into small pieces, dip into egg with sugar, then deep fry with melt butter. It is so nice to have these with a cup Kopi-O.
Home cooked food is the best, and it is even better if the children is involved in the food preparation. They will learn to appreciate food more.
